Having a Ball!
Peter and I keep laughing about this photo, so I thought we would share it! Elizabeth has four of these colored whiffle balls and she LOVES them! The holes make it easy for her little fingers to grasp...and, like everything else she touches, they almost always end up in her mouth! Yummy!

Lazy dayz in the cement pond
We have finally joined the jet-set. This past weekend we "installed" a backyard pool where Jeeves brings round freshly mixed cocktails and young water sprites frollick and play. Why, there's one now:
Splish, splash, I was takin' a bath...
Elizabeth is a big fan of the bath. She really likes to kick and splash and generally make sure everything--and every one--gets wet. From several feet away, may I present, "Elizabeth in Bath":

Summer Splash!
Since summer officially arrived last week, we decided it was about time to purchase a pool for the backyard.
(Okay, so maybe the term "pool" is a little generous! We're not exactly digging a giant hole or erecting a ladder to climb into an above-ground monstrosity!) We're talking the $24 CVS Pharmacy-variety blow-up "family fun pool"! Woohoo!!!
So here are a couple of pictures of Elizabeth enjoying a little afternoon soak.
(This was later in the day following our morning at the beach... when we eventually gave up on braving the cold ocean water and opted for lounging and cocktails by the pool instead!) We have a few more photos, but Peter and I decided that we are just too vain (and blubbery!) to post any of the ones that actually show evidence of said blubber! Anyway, she wasn't too sure about this whole pool idea at first, but she seemed to dig it after a while. We're keeping it up for a few days so Lindsay and Beckett can come play in it on Wednesday! Hooray!

Tower 42
Here is Elizabeth getting all lathered up with Water Babies lotion for her big day at the beach! (And by "the beach" I mean El Porto...just south of Tower 42 in front of Alfredo's Snack Stand, of course!) After circling the parking lot FOUR times for a parking spot, (why do surfers have to take an hour and a half to strip out of their wet suits, load up their boards, and pack up their gear?!?) Peter, Elizabeth, and I met up with the J's (sans Julia) for a couple of hours in the sun. Elizabeth was not super-fond of the ocean water (we just dipped her feet in), but she was fascinated by it and she seemed to enjoy the sun and sand.
Here are a few pictures of her with Mommy, Auntie P, Auntie Sammy, Hunkie D, and Daddy!
(By the time she landed in Daddy's arms, she was dunzo and ready for a big nap!) Enjoy!
P.S. Yes...that is, in fact, a Texas Longhorn swimsuit and matching sun hat! Awwww...

Busy, Busy, Busy!
That is the best word I can think of to describe Elizabeth when she is sitting in her playpen!
She is just plain BUSY! She's checking out her toys, grabbing at anything within reach, talking to her little caterpillar,...and generally just caught up in her own little world that is busy, busy, busy!
MUCH too busy to be interrupted by Mommy, who is trying to get a good picture!
(Don't you love the expression..."Do I have to smile again?!?!")

Feet are friends...not food!
We were just having a good time rolling around on the floor this morning! So I took these cute little snapshots!
Then, Elizabeth and I were off to meet Erin and Anika for lunch in Manhattan Beach. It was a GORGEOUS day! We ate lunch at an outdoor cafe a few blocks from the beach, then Erin and Elizabeth and I strolled down by the ocean to Manhattan Ave. to check out a few shops! Fun day!

Harvest Surprise!?!?
For those who have not seen the latest commercials (which I guess reveals to you that we are one of the few who still do not have Tivo or any of those other fancy commercial-skipping devices), "Harvest Surprise" appears to be a form of liquid trickery...a concoction by the folks at Juicy Juice designed to sneak vegetables into the fruit juice that kids already love. The theory, I suppose, is that they will hardly notice that they are drinking carrots mixed in with their apple juice?? As one who was never successfully fooled into developing an appreciation for the veggies, I am skeptical. However, since Elizabeth seems to LOVE the taste of carrots (no fooling...I think it might be her favorite food so far!), I am thinking that we just skip the "surprise" and head straight to V-8! But first, we have to master the art of the sippy cup!

Determination...
Perseverance...Courage...Persistence...Focus..and, yes, sometimes Teamwork, too! I'm pretty sure you've all seen the cheesy corporate plaques that display profound words of motivation beneath a soaring eagle, a flock of geese, or some lone ladybug that is supposedly displaying a trait worth emulating in the professional world. (Er...Grandpa, do you have one of these in your office?? ;-)) Anyway, after watching Elizabeth put forth all of her effort into reaching, pulling, and standing to get her hands into anything and everything inside that ding-dang diaper basket--I am convinced that none of those winged creatures have anything on her! Now THIS is what I call inspirational!

Fathers' Day Tribute
As Peter is about to celebrate his first Fathers' Day with Elizabeth, I confess that I'm feeling a bit sentimental...not only about Peter, who is a phenomenal father to her, but also about my own Dad-O (Grandpa) and Peter's Dad (Pop-Pop)!
I will do my best to make sure that Elizabeth knows and appreciates how very, very fortunate she is to have these three gentle, loving, caring men in the roles of Daddy and Grandfather. Hugs and kisses to all three of you!
Too Pooped to Play!
Every once in a while, the onset of Elizabeth's "sleep window" appears out of nowhere. One minute it seems she is happily and busily rolling around, grabbing and chewing on everything in sight, playing with her feet, etc.
And the next minute she is DUNZO...she begins to whine and then gets this look on her face that seems to say, "WHY am I still here with you people instead of napping snuggly in my crib?!?! WHY?!?!" It is, of course, the saddest look ever...so we do our best to watch for the early signs of fatigue before we get to the whining, yawning, eye-rubbing, most-pathetic-look-ever stage!

Purple's Little Friend
As I continue to upload pictures of Elizabeth onto our computer, I am realizing that I am also compiling quite a collection of photos of Elizabeth's little friend, Beckett! The Beckster (son of Lindsay and Nathan) is just two months younger than The Purp, but don't call him a LITTLE guy at all (or Nathan will clobber you! haha!) Seriously though, he's packing on the pounds and growing like a weed--making E look downright scrawny! (That's okay, though...it will help her feel dainty and feminine! haha!) Anyway, here are a few adorable photos of Beckett with his Mom and Dad...and one by himself looking all manly as he naps in his stroller! Too cute!

Life is a picnic...
...or, at least it was yesterday!
Elizabeth and I went to the Annual Westchester Lutheran 2nd Grade Picnic at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach to visit "Grandma Nancy"--(for those who don't know...Nancy and I taught 2nd grade there together for five years, and she now plays the role of Elizabeth's California Grandma!)--and we had a great time! Elizabeth wore a pretty sunhat and some spf 50 Water Babies lotion and seemed to enjoy herself immensely. Not surprisingly, however, Mommy seemed to forget to cover HERSELF in suntan lotion OR wear a hat, so she came back with a pretty little sunburn! OUCH!

Look Ma...No Hands!
It seems that, in Elizabeth's quest to become a more stable sitter upper, she has decided that it is necessary to keep her hands down to her sides at-the-ready in case she starts to topple over! And, yet, at the same time, her ever-growing need to chew on anything and everything in sight requires that she have something in her mouth at all times! So...this is how she meets both objectives at once! Impressive, don't ya think?

Life Imitating Art?
We took this picture as evidence of Elizabeth sitting up all by herself...but then as I took a second look, it started to appear quite artistic! ;-)
So I decided if it's good enough for August Macke (Sitting Nude With Cushions)
and even good enough for Picasso (Blue Nude)
then it's good enough for us!
Now the only question that remains is what to call it? "Nude on Changing Table" or "Purple Nude"? ;-)

The Face of Mischief...
For all those who have ever wondered if Elizabeth has a "tell" when she is about to do something mischievous...(you know, like the gambler whose hand twitches when he has a good poker hand, or the criminal who blinks too much when he's telling a lie)...she absolutely does! Take a look at this sweet little "Look at me...I'm so cute and innocent" expression (but take note of her eyes darting to the right), and then take a look at the very next action that happened in the blink-of-an-eye!
Good thing Mommy and Daddy are two steps ahead of her...for now! We had already positioned the faucet so that if she does manage to turn it on, it won't land in the tub! GENIUS! ;-)

Test Post w/ Video
In order to test out posting a video in the blog, I give you one of the great tackles from the recent France v. New Zealand test match. Sebastien Chabal perfectly times this hit and by the look of things, his opposite number is feeling a bit like a new-born giraffe:
Why a rugby video as a test video? That's like asking why do humans need to breathe, why do geese fly in formation, or why does bread always lands butter side down? It's just the nature of the universe.
Besides, the Purp told me just the other day there is not enough rugby on this blog. So there.

"I call the big one 'Bitey'!"
For those of you whose households are not besieged by daily episodes of The Simpsons...(which, by the way, is on 3 times a day for your viewing pleasure...who knew!?)... that quote is from Homer in an episode where he naively decides to adopt some possums as pets. Anyway..."Auntie P" was visiting us the other day when Elizabeth (not unlike "Bitey") decided to take a little chunk right out of her cheek! She must have liked it...because she returned for seconds, not once, but several times! Auntie P was just holding her and nuzzling her and all of a sudden "arrrghhh"--Elizabeth leaned in close and eagerly attacked her face! Since Elizabeth doesn't have any teeth yet (thankfully!),we were all rolling on the floor laughing! It was quite a sight to see! And, since she did it again and again, we were able to get some pictures of it! Mommy plans to be on the lookout for "Auntie P-flavored" teething rings!

She was a good little monkey...
...but always very curious! ;-)
Almost as soon as she sat up on the changing table, Elizabeth began to get a little curious about what was in the "mysterious basket" that Mommy and Daddy were always reaching into. When we stood her up for a quick little investigation, you would think she would have been disappointed to discover only baby wipes, lotion, rash cream, diapers, and other types of diaper-changing essentials! But, no! In fact, she was even MORE intrigued and now frequently seems to want to stand up, reach out, and peer over the top of that basket! Too cute!

Sitter Upper!
That's right, folks! Elizabeth is officially a Sitter Upper! And here is a picture to prove it! Basically, that means that she sits up for about 30-45 seconds at a time all by herself—and we think that's a pretty long time!—before toppling over! WOOHOO! This picture was taken just after bathtime (note the pink hooded bath towel behind her) on her changing table. She seems to like just hanging out and sitting there--who knows, maybe it's the nice cushy landing when she topples! Anyway, it's hard to believe how much she changes from day to day!
